David Dunne’s DJ career spans over twenty years behind the decks and more than 17 years of playing dance music on the Radio. In 1989 he found himself on Manchester’s Piccadilly Radio during the heady days of “Madchester” presenting “The Isometric Dance Class” - the only radio show playing the huge tunes clubbers were experiencing at legendary Manchester venues such as the Hacienda, Legends and Konspiracy. At that time he gave DJs such as Justin Robertson, Mike Pickering and Jon Da Silva their first radio exposure.
Radio, DJing and Dance Music became the focus of David’s developing career, which eventually led to him becoming a founder staff member at Kiss 102 & 105 in Manchester and Yorkshire where as Head of Music & Senior Presenter he was able to break new club records on air and at his gigs. He then continued to present on Galaxy radio, consolidating his profile in the North of England as one of the region’s most familiar and best loved DJs. In late 1998 he spread his wings by leaving Galaxy Radio to join national station Atlantic 252, not just as a dance jock, but as Programme Director, giving Lottie, DJ Touche, Eddy Temple Morris & James Hyman their first Radio shows. Following that, he left to join Ministry of Sound as Managing Director of Radio, setting up their Digital Radio station In London, creating their online internet radio service and helping to make it the most successful dance site in Europe with over a million hits every month.
He then joined the UK’s best known producer of specialist radio programming, Wise Buddah, as a consultant for development in July 2000 and since 2003 has worked for the hugely successful Hed Kandi team. This involves producing and presenting the Hed Kandi radio shows on the Galaxy Network in the UK, the highest rated specialist show on Galaxy and the most listened to Saturday night programme on ALL radio in the Galaxy transmission areas. The show is also syndicated to over 24 stations internationally. David also presents a Sunday morning eclectic chill out show on the Galaxy Network called “NU Cool”. He has also guested and presented shows on Ministry of Sound Radio, Piccadilly Key 103, Jazz FM, Smooth FM, Cadena Cien in Ibiza and Giant Radio in Miami.
In 1999 he was named by Musik Magazine as one of the 50 most powerful people in Dance Music, he features in the books “Manchester, England” & “Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel” and has appeared in countless features and interviews in Mixmag, DJ, BBM, IDJ, The Big Issue and many local and national press stories.
His club appearances as a DJ read like a “Who’s Who” of the last 20 years of the clubbing world: Ministry of Sound, Up Yer Ronson, Cream, Subterranea, Golden, The End, Paradise Factory, Turnmills, Dave Haslam’s legendary Manchester nights Freedom and Yellow, Hanover Grand, Retro, Love 2 B, Room At the Top, Decadence, The Arches, Renaissance, Miss Moneypenny’s, The Honey Club, Fantazia, plus festival appearances at Creamfields, Global Gathering, Hi-Fi, V Festival and B-Live. He appeared every month at his beloved Hacienda from ‘94 to its closure in ‘97 and was a resident at the club’s sister venue “Dry” for five years. He featured eight times on MTV’s Dancefloor Chart Tour all over the UK & Ireland. From 2002 to 2003 he held residencies in London at his own “Northern Scum” and “DJ Deathmatch” nights. In recent years, his Ibiza stints have seen him play at Manumission, MTV’s Ibiza Festival, Amnesia, Es Paradis, Mambo, Bar M, Rock Bar, Eden, Es Vive and Bora Bora plus, every DJ’s dream … the old Terrace at Space.
As well as playing in Ibiza every year since 1996, David regularly plays in other countries; he DJed at the Winter Music Conference with Sister Bliss and Tall Paul for Ministry of Sound and also alongside Roger Sanchez at the Giant/Groove Radio rooftop parties. He also worked for Ministry of Sound on their world “annual” tours, and has also played in Prague, Milan, Hamburg, Paris, Malaysia, Chicago, Frankfurt, Marbella, Bogota, Medellin and Amsterdam.
Some of his more memorable experiences have included playing for the Spice Girls(!) three times at their end of tour parties, for Motown Records at the Cannes Film Festival, the Mysteryland Festival in Holland, and at private parties for Simply Red, Take That, MTV Europe, London Records, Talkin’ Loud and Virgin Records.
David was delighted to be asked to DJ at parties for Hed Kandi in 2004 and has become one of busiest and most in-demand Hed Kandi DJs at home in the UK and internationally - he has played over 250 Hed Kandi nights spreading the Kandi vibe across the World. This year he returned to Ibiza for the 13th year in a row to play at Hed Kandi’s new Saturday night home Space and also selected and mixed CD2 of the very successful World Series: Brazil album for Hed Kandi which he promoted with a six date tour in Brazil itself.
In the last two years he completed a nine date tour of Australia, China and Singapore and added Cyprus, Russia, Kiev, Bulgaria, Canada, Helsinki, Verbier, Zurich, Zagreb, Venice, Croatia, Norway, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, Barcelona and Korea, to his “Gig Passport” as well as still playing across the UK every month. He is hoping for a holiday, soon…….
